Watch founding scientific director Michael Bronstein explain his vision - and love of Vienna.
AITHYRA, the Insitute for Biomedial AI of the Austrian Academy of Sciences, celebrated its first birthday in September 2025. Established by the Austrian Academy of Sciences and funded by the Boehringer Ingelheim Foundation, the new institute brings together researchers from the fields of AI and biomedicine under Bronstein's scientific leadership. The result? New ways to change the game for life sciences.
In its first year, AITHYRA built out its scientific and administrative teams, launched a new corporate identity and moved into its temporary premises at the Marxbox in Vienna, thanks to the support of the Vienna Business Agency, where it will be located until the planned Life Sciences Center Vienna is constructed. As part of the Vienna BioCenter campus, AITHYRA is located in the heart of one of the largest life sciences hubs in Europe, which combines research, education and business on a single campus.
It has made a splash in the Viennese life sciences scene, with its faculty members making appearances at the Medical University Day and Vienna Innovation Conference, as well as the Fading Wall Science Summit in Berlin. One of the greatest successes was the first AITHYRA Symposium ‘AI for Life Science’, which brought together top thinkers and doers from the around the world.
In the video below, founding scientific director Michael Bronstein explains why he is personally drawn to Vienna, and why the city is ideal for AITHYRA's groundbreaking AI research.
