World-class Vienna: A city where research is (about) life

Vienna is on the up as a global life science hub, in areas ranging from tissue regeneration and molecular biology to bionic limb reconstruction, artifical intelligence and veterinary medicine.
This 30-minute editorial documentary by the Austrian public broadcaster (ORF), first broadcast in early 2025, dives into the scene with interviews from some of the city's most prominent life science leaders and experts. In order of appearance:
- Elly Tanaka, biochemist, regeneration specialist and director of the Institute of Molecular Biotechnology (IMBA)
- Andrea Pauli, molecular biologist and senior group leader at the Research Institute of Molecular Pathology (IMP)
- Eva Czernohorszky, director of technology services at the Vienna Business Agency
- Oskar Aszmann, head of the department for plastic and reconstructive surgery at the Medical University of Vienna (MedUni)
- Heinz Faßmann, president of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW)
- Michael Bronstein and Anita Ender, scientific director and managing director of the Aithyra Institute
- Daniela Klein-Jöbstl and Borbala Foris, researcher and assistant professor of the University of Veterinary Medicine (VetMedUni)
- Manfried Rieger and Maria Löflund, director of R&D and director of production at pharmaceutical forerunner Takeda
Follow the camera crew as they visit locations ranging from the banks of the Danube to the Vienna BioCenter, Austria's largest life science campus and home to any number of axolotls; from Vienna's renowned general hospital to a cow-filled research farm belonging to the University of Veterinary Medicine.
