The home of Sigmund Freud and psychoanalysis, the birthplace of the Vienna Succession Movement, and the origin of the  ‘knowledge economy’ concept, where higher learning drives economic progress. Viennese thinkers have truly left their mark on the world. Viennese-born Hedy Lamarr invented the frequency hopping system used in WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS. Her contemporary, Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky, revolutionised working women's daily lives by designing the first fitted kitchen. Ludwig Wittgenstein's work on logic and language may have laid the groundwork for artificial intelligence. The Viennese pioneered revolutionary thought in all areas of life: from education to integration, civil rights to the arts. 

With 23 institutions of higher learning and nearly 200,000 students, Vienna is brimming with talent and skill. The numbers speak for themselves—Vienna’s research quota stands at over 3.6% of its GDP, and in the last five years, scientists at Viennese institutions were awarded three Nobel prizes.

The Smart (Climate) City Vienna Strategy creates a roadmap for maintaining superior life quality, increasing resource conservation and promoting social and technological innovation, all in line with the city’s commitments to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.  

Scientists, innovators and researchers benefit from a dense funding network and a booming life sciences ecosystem. Office and laboratory spaces for production or research in venues such as the Technology Centre Seestadt or the BioCenter give scientists, students, research groups, manufacturers, and technology businesses room to grow, develop and trailblaze. 

The city is praised worldwide for its top quality of life – which is thanks to many decades of thoughtful action – acquiring mountain spring water, building an excellent public transport network, and ensuring every part of the city has equal access to shops, parks and transportation. Vienna’s social housing system was established during the inter-war period, and today half a million residents profit from it and further amenities such as subsidized kindergartens, myriad libraries and swimming pools in all 23 districts of the city.
